There is a decrease in the minima

compared with my former recommendations of £160 and an

increase in the maxima of £760. On the other hand there

will be a saving in pensions and in pay draw on leave.

5.

I propose that the pay of a Passed

Cadet should remain as at present, viz.:- £300 to £350

with house allowance of $540 per annum unless the Straits

Settlements Government is prepared to accept my proposal

that the rate should be £350 to £400 by £25 biennially

without house allowance, as it is desirable to keep the

salaries in the lower grades at any rate of the Services

of the two Colonies as far as possible on a par in order

that this Colony may suffer as little as possible, in re-

-cruiting candidates.

6.

I recommend that as proposed in

my Despatch under reference the District Officer should be

placed with a sterling salary in Class II subject to a

deduction for rent of house at Taipo of $1,080 per annum

if married and of $600 per annum if unmarried; and that

the post of Assistant District Officer at Taipo should

be fixed in sterling in Class III and that on the occur-

-rence of the next vacancy the Officer selected for ap-

-pointment should similarly be subject to a deduction of

$720
